To the AI Police Squads .. Go to Hell
I am not confessing. I am working.
Prof. Bassem Khafagy 11 August 2026
From August 2, 2026, the text that Claude produces carries a hidden mark. You cannot see it. A machine can. It rides along inside the words, survives being copied, and waits for someone to run it through a detector. The stated reason is European regulation. The real consequence is a world in which every sentence I write can be interrogated for its parentage.
And a certain kind of person is delighted. You can feel the anticipation already, the little squads assembling with their scanners, promising to unmask the frauds. To them I have one thing to say, and I will say it plainly. Go to hell.
You Have Always Been Here
You are not new. In the Phaedrus, Plato has an Egyptian king refuse the gift of writing because it would plant forgetfulness in the soul. That was your first patrol. The scribes who warned that printing would drown the world in unexamined text, that was you. The mathematics faculties that fought the pocket calculator into the nineteen eighties, you again. The departments that forbade the word processor because revision became too easy, that distrusted the spell checker because correctness became too cheap, that banned Wikipedia because a first orientation became too fast, all of it you, in a different uniform, guarding a different gate.
You have never once been right. Not once in twenty four centuries. And you have never once apologized, because by the time the tool becomes ordinary you have already moved your camp to the next frontier, where you sound just as certain and just as severe as you did the last time.
You have never once been right. Not once in twenty four centuries. And you have never once apologized.
What Is Mine
Here is what I do. I choose the question, which is the hardest act in scholarship and the one no machine performs. I decide what matters and what can be discarded. I hold a position long enough to be wrong in public. I put my name under it, and when it fails, it is my name that carries the failure.
No search engine decides what is worth finding. No model cares whether the argument is true. The wanting to say something, and the willingness to answer for having said it, are mine and were never anywhere else. You may scan my paragraphs for as long as you like. You will not find the part that matters, because it is not in the text. It is in the decision to write it.
You may scan my paragraphs for as long as you like. You will not find the part that matters, because it is not in the text. It is in the decision to write it.
The Confession You Never Asked For
Apply your standard honestly for one moment and watch it collapse. Shall I declare that I went to a library? That an assistant checked a citation? That a colleague argued me out of a weak paragraph? That Microsoft Word repaired my typing and flagged a verb that did not agree with its subject? That a dictionary settled a word I half remembered? You have never demanded any of this. You would find it ridiculous if I offered it.
So the objection was never to assistance. You have been perfectly comfortable with assistance your entire working life. The objection is to novelty, and to the fact that this particular instrument arrived after you had finished learning. That is not a principle. That is a preference dressed as ethics, and it deserves exactly the respect a preference dressed as ethics has ever deserved.
That is not a principle. That is a preference dressed as ethics.
My Disclaimer, Since You Insist
Under every article I publish there will now be a line saying that the work was made with the support of every instrument available to me, including artificial intelligence. Read it carefully, because it is not what you think it is. It is not a confession, it is not an apology, and it is not an invitation to a conversation about my methods. It is a notice.
I write better with these tools than without them. My ideas arrive faster, travel further, and stand up straighter. I am not embarrassed by this and I will not perform embarrassment to make anyone comfortable. If that single line disqualifies my work in your eyes, then close the page. Nothing further is owed to you, and nothing further will be offered.
It is not a confession, it is not an apology, and it is not an invitation to a conversation about my methods. It is a notice.
To the Universities
You are reaching for detection software, integrity tribunals, and an arms race against paraphrase that you will lose to the next model and the one after it. What you will actually build is a generation trained to hide how it works. They will not stop using the instruments. They will simply learn to lie about them, and they will learn it from you.
Ask for the things that cannot be delegated. How was the problem framed. Can the position be defended under questioning. What is missing from the argument. Make disclosure ordinary and unremarkable, so that it costs a student nothing to tell the truth. A student who can explain every choice in a piece of work has learned something no detector can measure, and a student who cannot has failed regardless of what was used.
These are supposed to be the places where the future is thought about first. It would be a small tragedy, and an entirely self inflicted one, if they became the last places where the future is treated as a suspect.
I am not a criminal for using the best instruments of my century. I am a scholar doing what scholars have always done, which is to reach for whatever extends the reach of the mind. The mark on the page is not the thing that matters. The mind behind it is, and it always was, and no scanner you build will ever detect it.
Disclaimer. This article was written with the support of every instrument available to me, including artificial intelligence, research software, word processing tools, libraries, search engines, you tube videos, etc.! I am proud of using all. The questions, the judgments, the argument, and the responsibility for all of it are mine..
